I did lights, sound, set design and construction.
The Story:
From this show I learned to understand my limits. My first professional job in theatre, what a nightmare! Please remember I was 16 at this point. While the show, Cabaret, went well and the production was "The largest production we've mounted" it just about killed me.
I was in my third year at the performing arts school and had gotten my drivers license days before, when I took this job. I turned it down originally, but with persuasion and the dream of buying my own class ring with the money, I took the job. I was to be the technical director for a show at this community theatre. I did a great job for the budget (@ $150 for everything) and the amount of crew there was for the build (my father, and a nice young man, and myself). The real killer was, at school, I was opening Fiddler on the Roof and working a touring show (in rehearsals). So I worked during Tech week from Sunday straight to Friday, all day at school till 5 or 6, then drive two hours, work all night, drive two hours, go to school. By the end of the week I wasn't driving myself (my family took turns driving) and slept twice a day for two hours. The show opened and it was well received. And God Bless My Father because he pulled the same hours and a then some. The final kicker is all the money I earned was eaten up by gas mileage, but again my father and mother came through and ate the expense so I got my ring. And I wear it to remember.
